Natural Hair vs. The Gym

Keep your heart rate up-0843So many black women, choose not to go to the gym for fear of messing up their hairstyle. It’s no secret we try to make a look last as long as we can. But when we are spending an hour sweating every other day that cute hairstyle may not last very long.

One question I get often is how I work out, without it affecting my hair. I think I’ve mastered the trick. But let’s be honest here. I do wear my hair natural more often than not. When my hair is straight, I am most likely not doing any heavy workouts (prob. just yoga lol).

My secret is… I do my hair twice a week. I wash or co-wash my hair on Sunday, do my style depending on what I am feeling that week. usually a twist-out. Then I go about my life. Every night I pineapple my hair, which means putting it into a really high ponytail. Then on Wednesday night I spray my hair with water and re-twist to get me through the rest of the week. This routine has been working for me for about a year. Sometimes that Wednesday refresh doesn’t happen and it is a bun for the rest of the week. Which is fine because I love a big curly bun. I think the major key is, to pineapple. I work out in a high ponytail and I sleep in it at night.

What are your tricks to help your hair last through your tough workouts? I would love to hear.

I consider myself to be a fitness enthusiast. Lately, I have been going to the gym and working out more consistently that I have in a couple of years. I’ve made some small changes that have made such a big difference in working out regularly.

  1. Go to a gym near you. Weather you go to a gym that is close to your job or right up the street from your house you will be more motivated to go when you see in the gym on a regular basis. In the past, I was a member of a gym that was about 20 minutes from my house and was not on my typical route home. I would find myself making up every excuse as to why I can’t make the gym that day.
  2. Always keep workout clothes in your car. There has been many times when I was out running errands and had a little time where I could run and have a quick workout.
  3. Create a schedule. Making a schedule is a great way I hold myself accountable. For example I never have plans on Wednesdays, and I know not to make plans because I go to the gym right after work.
  4. Walk. If you feel like you don’t have time take a walk.
  5. Love you workout clothes. Every so often I like to update my workout clothes if you have great workout clothes and don’t use them, they will be wasted.

I have been wanting to work out for about a week now! I have been sick back to back and it kicked my butt, knocking me off my game. Tomorrow I should have time to go to they gym and I am going to go take a run which I am excited about it.

You may think I live in Old Navy, I do, but only because they have great things that are always on sale. I found this workout top in the spring for under $10. It is very comfortable, I love how it has a loose fit. I love wearing all back especially going to the gym. It makes working out chic.

It’s Workout Time!

After resting all week, I think it is time to hit the gym! I was under the weather and now it is time to get back to work! One thing I am always excited about when it comes to the gym is gym clothes… something about what you have on is really motivating! I have been loving the black and white look when going to the gym.

Gym Time

Ever since I could renumber I have always had a love for being healthy and taking care of myself. Over the course of the years I have started and stopped so many work out regiments, that never seemed to stick. Until now, the longest I have worked out on a consistent basis was four or five months. Back in January Frank and I decided to get a gym membership to help get in shape for the wedding. I thought to myself it is cheap enough that if I don’t go on a regular basis it wouldn’t hurt so bad, but it turns out I love the gym. It is a great stress reliever, amazing for your health, and I love workout clothes. Lately, I have been going anywhere between 3 and 5 times a week.

Normally, I am a little high strung and I find it difficult to relax. I have no idea why and I think I have been like this my entire life. When I feel like I have a lot going on, which is usually always, I try to find things that calm me down. Working out dosen’t exactly calm me down but, it does help me to relive stress. After my session, I’m usually clam and mellowed. It could be because I am tired, but that is neither here nor there.

Having a healthy lifestyle is extremely important to me. I want to age gracefully in a healthy way. To be honest, I love love love french fries and I could eat them every day. Not the most healthy thing to do, oh and ice cream, pizza, did I say french fries? Nonetheless, working out is so good for us humans. It keeps our heart healthy, keeps our blood circulating and other great things that someone with an MD could tell you.

Is it just me, but when you get home from a long day the first thing you do is find a comfy pair of yoga pants? I do! I whenever I am out at various clothing stores I always make a pass through the workout section to see if i can find any workout clothes on sale. Usually, I find really cute things for less than $10. Which is amazing!

New Year Resolutions

Good Evening Everyone I hope you are enjoying the first six days of the new year. I wanted to share with you all what my new years resolution are for 2015!

I would like to work out more. Growing up I was an athlete, when I got to college I still tried to maintain going to the gym 3 times a week, I kept it up my entire freshman year! Then I began to work out off and on, until recently I am in it to win it! ~hopefully~

So I have been obsessed with taking pictures for as long as I can remember… I always had a camera. As I have gotten older I find myself not caring to snap as much shots as I did in my youth… I have an amazing camera (two to be exact) I need to use them more.

Attend more church related functions. Last year one of my resolutions was to read the Bible more. CHECK! Currently, I do read (listen) the bible every day. This year I would like to actually attend more church functions and be more of an active member of my church.

I would like to have more fun and live more in the moments. I find myself in situations where because I am trying to control the situation, organize something, or just being your typical Type A personality I forget to have fun in life and the cherish the good times.
